The history of the Animal brand is very much tied up with its watches. Back in 1987 two surfers in the south west of England were becoming increasingly frustrated with losing their watches in the surf and waves of the Dorset and Cornish coastlines. Based out of their Mothers garage they developed the now famous Animal Watch Strap and started selling the product to local surfers and windsurfers, they used the profits made to fund surf trips and visit exotic locations around the world.
The straps they made proved immensely popular with not just surfers but other outdoor sport enthusiasts, people who took part in mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding could also identify with the benefits that the velcro style strap provided. The robust design and qualities of the strap combined with their functional and highly colourful appearance made the wearer stand out as someone who was into the alternative freesports lifestyle.
As a result of this initial success the Animal team set out to design an Animal Watch that could carry forward the premise built by the initial watch strap. What they had envisaged was a fit for purpose and active use watch that complimented the feel of the straps. The team at Animal had a number of main characteristics in mind for their initial Animal Watch. Features such as the highest level of water resistance, corrosion proof and the highest standards of rigorous testing at factory and in ocean conditions were to be as standard. The other characteristic was to be the overall robust quality of the watch due to its association with activity and free sports such as surfing mountain biking and snow sports, this meant the watch had to have a very low return rate of less than 3%.
With the introduction of the initial Animal watches interest grew very quickly with rapid sale success. The collection grew considerably and soon included new models and more technical features such as tide movements, 3 eye chrono movements and custom developed digital tide modules. The current range of Animal watches is a mixture of new ideas with designs of some old favourites that some die hard Animal Watch fans will recognise. Overall Animal Watches are a good bet because they encompass what the Animal brand is all about and is a key part of the heritage and history of this well known brand.
