O’Neill is a surfboard and wetsuit brand that is also associated with clothing and fashion. The brand originally started in San Francisco California but relocated to Santa Cruz known for its famous California surf culture.
The brand is often talked about as being the inventor of the modern wetsuit through the company founder Jack O’Neill. O’Neill opened his first surf shop on a highway near his favourite surf break, it was here that he sold his first wetsuits that were made by gluing together pieces of closed cell foam, Jack O’Neill had worked out that by using these crude designs surfers could take advantage of extra minutes in the often cold conditions of this part of the California coast. The extra time in the water could often be twice as long as normal and the wetsuits proved popular among those who were passionate about their surfing.
With the design of the first wetsuits, O’Neill had set the ball rolling to open up new surfing locations around the world that up until this point had been practically impossible to surf due to the freezing conditions of the water.
Since this point O’Neill has made countless improvements to the design and quality of it wetsuits. O’Neill’s son Pat was also a Pioneer in developing the leash using materials such as Nylon lines, suction cups and surgical tubing.
O’Neill is now synonymous with surfing and wetsuits by those interested in the sport world wide, however the brand is also well known for its fashion ranges that stay true to the brands roots in surfing but branching out to the whole lifestyle theme.
